ASE Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

The Academy for Scholarship and Entrepreneurship believes that school is a scholar’s top priority. If at all possible, Scholars must make medical or other appointments during after school hours or on weekends. If that is absolutely impossible, we ask that parents/guardians let the school know as far in advance as possible and that the Scholar bring in a note verifying the reason for the absence. If a Scholar is to be out sick, the parent/guardian should call the School Office before 8:00 a.m. so we know they will be out. It is the Scholar's responsibility to collect missed work.

Attendance is critical to the academic progress of the scholar. For instance:

  • 10 or more unexcused absences per marking period may result in a failing grade of 55%.
  • 20 or more unexcused absences in a term may result in a failing grade of 45% and may prevent you from being eligible for a credit recovery class in that particular class.

Absences (Attendance Team)

At the Academy for Scholarship and Entrepreneurship there is an Attendance team that meets on a regular basis. If a scholar is absent from class, he or she should do one of the following within 2 days of returning to school:

  1. Bring a note to the attendance office from the doctor on letterhead from the doctor’s office.  If there was no doctor visit, bring a note to the attendance office from a parent or guardian stating the date(s) of the absence and the reason.

OR

  1. Have his or her parents or guardian call the attendance office and give the date(s) of the absence and the reason(s).

Tardiness: A Scholar is considered tardy when not seated in their assigned classroom at the start of the day or at the start of a class.  This is considered disruptive and will be treated as a discipline problem.

If for any reason a Scholar arrives after 2nd period attendance has been taken to school, he/she must report to the Main Office before going to class in order to have their attendance reversed.

Leaving the campus (school):   Scholars are not permitted to leave ASE campus once they are inside the building. Leaving the campus (school) without authorization can result in disciplinary action. In addition parents and guardians will be notified.  Parents should be aware that Scholars are permitted to leave campus once the school day ends which can range from 2:10– 5:00pm.

Early Dismissals: In the rare event that a scholar needs an early dismissal, the following procedures must be followed:

  1. The Scholar must call his or her legal guardian and a staff member must speak with the guardian to confirm guardianship.
  2. The legal adult (18 or over) guardian (as stated on the emergency contact card) must give the scholar permission to leave. Scholars will not be allowed to leave school early without parent or guardian permission.
  3. Scholars must make up for all missed work.

Staff members will ILOG permission given and the name of the adult.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Our goal at Academy for Scholarship and Entrepreneurship (ASE) every school year is to ensure that every scholar attends school regularly. Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing
through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. Your child is
less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent—which means missing 18 or more days over the course of an entire school year.

Research shows:
* Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
* By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.
* By 9th grade good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.

Absences can add up quickly. A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month!!
Clearly going to school regularly matters!

We don’t want your child to fall behind in school and get discouraged. Please ensure that your child attends school every
day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

* Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
* Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
* Ensure your students go to school every day unless they are truly sick
* Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
* Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.
* Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or
another parent to take your child to school.

We want to motivate and reward your student for good attendance. ASE will also participate in the DOE Perfect Attendance program.

Please take a minute to review the ASE attendance policy on the back of this letter. Let us know
how we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day.

We want your child to be successful in school!

If you have any questions or need more information please contact Mr. Nunez @ Anunezcastillo@schools.nyc.gov or 718-696-3840 Ext 2212. Fax: 718-6969-3841.

Sincerely,

Mr. Nunez

Start Time: School begins promptly at 7:55 am. A scholar would like to eat breakfast at school; the scholars should arrive between 7:00 am, and 7:30 am. Scholars are considered late for school if they come after 7:55 am.

Daily Absences: If your scholar is absent from the school at 10:00 am, you will receive a text message from the application of Kinvo. Each teacher will send a kinvo message to notify the parent/guardian for each period that the scholar missed.

Lateness: Scholars who arrive late (after 7:55 am) will be required to sign in with school staff before class by going to the main office and signing the late book. Parents/Guardians of scholars who are excessively late will be notified and may be required to attend a meeting at the school to discuss how to support the student arriving on time.

Attendance Matters

A friendly reminder:

A calendar year has a total of 365 days.

A school year has only 181 days.

That leaves 184 days to spend on family time, holidays, shopping, household jobs, and other appointments.

Note: Please set a goal with your scholar: Aim for 100% attendance for the rest of the school year.

0 – 9 Day Absences

10 – 19 Day Absences

20 – Day Absences

100 – 95 % Attendance

94 – 92 % Attendance

85 – 80% Attendance

Very Good:

Best chance of success, Gets your scholar off to a solid start.

Worrying:

Less chance for school success. Make it harder for your scholar to make progress.

Serious Concern:

Your scholar will find it very difficult to make progress. May result in court action and likely route to dropping out from school.
